January 1 and 6 are public holidays, and in between sits the only Sunday of the month when Barcelona’s shops can open, the 3rd. The January sales in Barcelona are the winter discount season that starts after Three Kings’ Day on 6 January and can run for up to two months, with each shop choosing its own start date and discount. Last year the big chains opened their sales on 7 January, a Thursday in 2027. For premium labels head to Passeig de Gràcia, for mid-priced chains to Portal de l’Àngel, and for a Sunday trip out of town to La Roca Village, which opens every day.
When are the January sales in Barcelona? Most big chains start on 7 January, the day after Three Kings, and open online sales on the evening of the 6th. In January 2027 shops close on the 1st and 6th and on every Sunday except the 3rd. La Roca Village outlet opens daily from 10 am to 9 pm, 40 minutes from the centre.
Which days to shop on your trip
Plan the shopping around the calendar before you book. If your dates cover the start of January, the 1st and the 6th are lost to shopping, and on the evening of the 5th the centre fills up for the Three Kings parade, which leaves at 6 pm.
The sales themselves start on the 7th for most chains, and last year the online sale opened at 6 pm on the 6th. Shops can keep their sales going for up to two months, so a trip in mid or late January still catches them, with fewer sizes left and often lower prices. On Sundays the 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st, clothes shops are closed; the Sunday shopping guide explains what does open.
Where to shop the sales, by budget
Pick the area that matches what you want to buy:
- Premium brands: Passeig de Gràcia, with luxury labels and flagship stores of the big chains on the same avenue.
- Mid-priced fashion on foot: Portal de l’Àngel, a pedestrian street of chains that leads straight into the Gothic Quarter.
- Everything under one roof: El Corte Inglés on Plaça de Catalunya, for fashion, homeware and electronics.
- A mall away from the centre: L’Illa Diagonal or Westfield Glòries.
- Outlet prices plus the sales: La Roca Village or Viladecans The Style Outlets.
| Area | Best for | Sundays in January | Metro |
|---|---|---|---|
| La Roca Village | Luxury outlet | Every day | Direct coach from Estació del Nord |
| Westfield La Maquinista | A big mall with parking | Only the 3rd | Torras i Bages (L1), 633 m |
| L’Illa Diagonal | Fashion chains uptown | Only the 3rd | Les Corts (L3), 678 m |
| El Corte Inglés, Plaça de Catalunya | One-stop shopping | Only the 3rd | Catalunya (L1, L3), 85 m |
| Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel | Mid-priced chains | Only the 3rd | Urquinaona (L1, L4), 269 m from no. 20 |
| Passeig de Gràcia | Premium and luxury brands | Only the 3rd | Passeig de Gràcia (L2, L3, L4), 55 m from no. 43 |
The three central areas are within walking distance of each other. For hopping between malls, a T-casual card, 10 rides for €13 in zone 1, works out cheaper than single tickets; the metro ticket guide compares the options.
Tax-free shopping and price tags
Visitors who live outside the European Union can claim back the sales tax. Ask for the tax-free form when you pay, at La Roca, Viladecans and many shops in the centre, and have it validated at the airport before checking your luggage.
On the tag, a reduced item must show its previous price, and that price has to be the lowest the item had in the 30 days before the discount. So a jacket marked up in December and “reduced” in January shows its real saving, not an inflated one.
La Roca Village as a sales day trip
La Roca Village is the outlet for premium and luxury brands, with discounts all year that stack with each brand’s winter sale. It opens every day from 10 am to 9 pm, which makes it the only big shopping option on the January Sundays when the city is closed.
The direct coach leaves Estació del Nord hourly from 9 am, takes about 40 minutes and costs €25 return booked online or €27 on board; children aged 3 to 12 pay €14. It does not run on 1 or 6 January. For trainers and casual wear, Viladecans The Style Outlets is under 100 metres from its train station. The guide to outlets near Barcelona compares the two.
What you might not like
- One shopping Sunday all month: the 3rd; outside the city, only La Roca stays open on Sundays.
- Two holidays in the first week, the 1st and the 6th, plus the parade evening of the 5th.
- Returns are hard once you fly home: try things on in the shop, and keep the receipt.
- Pickpockets work the busy shopping streets; the Barcelona safety guide has the basics.
If you are arriving earlier, see Barcelona in December and what is open over the holidays in the Christmas opening hours guide.

Frequently asked questions about the January sales in Barcelona
When do the January sales start in Barcelona?
Each shop picks its own date. Last year the big fashion chains started on 7 January in store and on the evening of 6 January online, and many smaller shops followed the same week. In 2027, 7 January falls on a Thursday.
Are shops open on Sundays in Barcelona in January?
Only on Sunday 3 January 2027. On the other Sundays of the month, the 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st, clothes shops and shopping centres close, though restaurants, cinemas and small supermarkets stay open. Everything closes on 1 and 6 January, which are public holidays.
Is La Roca Village worth it during the sales?
Yes, if you want premium and luxury brands: the outlet already has reduced prices all year and adds each brand’s winter sale on top. It opens every day from 10 am to 9 pm, including Sundays, and the direct coach from Estació del Nord takes about 40 minutes and costs €25 return booked online.
Can I get a tax refund on my shopping in Barcelona?
If you live outside the European Union, yes. Ask for the tax-free form when you pay, at La Roca Village, Viladecans and many shops in the centre, and have it validated at the airport before you check in your luggage.
Can I return something I bought in the sales?
If the shop accepts returns the rest of the year, it has to keep doing so in the sales or tell you clearly before you pay. Faulty items can always be returned. As a visitor, try things on before you buy: returning a sale item once you are home is rarely practical.
Shop Barcelona’s sales on a weekday from the 7th, or on Sunday the 3rd, and keep La Roca for the Sundays after.
