An older passenger tapping a travel card at a Barcelona metro gate

Targeta Rosa, free Barcelona transport from 6,20 a year

The disability route is the part nobody mentions: a 33 % recognised disability qualifies at any age, not just at 60. The free tier covers unlimited travel including the airport metro stations, for an annual fee of 6,20 euros against the 22,80 a month an ordinary monthly pass costs.

More than 245.000 people in Barcelona hold the Targeta Rosa, the council’s social transport card, and most English-speaking residents have never heard of it. Two things about it are routinely got wrong. It is not only for pensioners: a recognised disability of 33 % or more qualifies at any age. And the tier called free is not quite free — it carries an annual fee of 6,20 euros — but in exchange the travel is unlimited, which next to the 22,80 euros a month of an ordinary monthly pass is a difference of 273,60 euros over a year. Nationality is not a condition; registration on the Barcelona padrón is.

Who can get Barcelona’s Targeta Rosa? Anyone aged 60 or over, and anyone with a 33 % recognised disability at any age. Both routes also require being on the padrón and household gross income at or below 9.240 euros for the free tier, or 18.480 for the reduced one.

Do you qualify? Two routes, and you need only one

Route inCondition
By age60 or over
By disability33 % or more, on a Generalitat certificate
Either route also needsRegistration on the Barcelona padrón and the income test

They are alternatives, not cumulative, and the disability route is the one that gets no publicity. A 45-year-old with a 33 % certificate has exactly the same entitlement as a 70-year-old.

For a foreign resident the practical question is usually the padrón rather than the card. Registering on the padrón is free and requires neither a lease nor a residence permit, which makes it a lower bar than most people assume. Anyone living in Hospitalet, Badalona or Sant Adrià applies through their own town hall instead, and then uses the card on the same buses.

The income test, and who it is applied to

TierHousehold gross annual income
Free9.240,00 euros or less
Reduced18.480,00 euros or less

The reduced threshold is exactly double the free one, and income counts gross from every source: pension, salary, benefits, rent and interest of any kind.

What decides more applications than the figure itself is whose income is counted, because the test applies to the household and not the person:

  • A married couple, and children under 18 living with their parents.
  • Children over 18 who are legally incapacitated.
  • Under-18s or legally incapacitated adults under the couple’s guardianship.

Someone living alone is assessed alone. A married couple is assessed together, and that is where applications most often fail by a small margin.

What it is worth against an ordinary ticket

TitlePer journeyCost
Single ticket2,90 euros2,90 euros
Ordinary T-casual1,30 euros13,00 euros for 10 journeys
Ordinary T-usualUnlimited22,80 euros a month
Targeta Rosa, reduced tier (T-4)0,23 euros2,25 euros for 10 journeys
Targeta Rosa, free tierUnlimited6,20 euros a year

Someone who travels daily and moves from a monthly pass to the free tier stops paying 273,60 euros a year and starts paying 6,20. On the reduced tier, a journey costs 0,23 euros, close to six times less than with a T-casual. The reduced card’s support is billed separately, a one-off 4,50 euros.

For anyone who does not qualify, the ticket that pays off compares the ordinary titles.

Where it works, including the bit that surprises people

OperatorCoverage
Trambaix and TrambesòsFare zone 1
Ferrocarrils de la GeneralitatWithin the metropolitan fare area
TMB and AMB busesMetropolitan area, Aerobús excluded
MetroThe whole network, including Aeroport T1 and T2 on line L9 Sud

The airport metro is included, which an ordinary T-casual specifically is not, so a cardholder reaches T1 and T2 at no extra cost. The Aerobús is not covered, and FGC stops at the edge of the metropolitan fare area, which is worth checking before a longer trip on the public transport network.

Beyond travel, the card carries discounts at more than 1.000 businesses across the city and the metropolitan area.

Applying, and what happens if nobody is home

  1. Complete and sign the form. The holder signs it, and the spouse too where applicable.
  2. Hand it in at any of the thirteen citizen advice offices, open 8:30 to 14:30, or post it to Apartat de correus 861 FD, 08080 Barcelona using a prepaid envelope.
  3. It arrives at home. Both tiers are hand-delivered to the holder at their address.

If nobody is in, the courier tries 3 times; with a sound letterbox showing the holder’s name the card is left there, and otherwise a collection slip goes in instead and the card can be picked up after 5 working days, on production of the slip and personal ID.

The card is changing, and the old one still works

The social title is migrating to the T-metropolitana, a contactless support that arrives by post. The entitlement does not change, only the plastic. Until the new one arrives the current card keeps working, and the new one works the moment it lands.

There is nothing to apply for and nothing to return. Three phone numbers cover the rest: 010 for general council information, 807 117 700 from outside the metropolitan area, and 900 700 077, which is the card’s own line and the one that saves time on income and renewal questions.

If the income test rules you out, other things in the city do not look at income at all: Gaudir Més is free to join and opens twelve municipal venues, and the free museum days calendar asks for nothing. Settling in more broadly is in living in Barcelona.

Frequently asked questions about the Targeta Rosa

Do you have to be over 60 to get the Targeta Rosa?

No. A recognised disability of 33 % or more qualifies at any age, on a certificate from the Generalitat, and it is an alternative route rather than an extra condition. Age 60 is the other route, and both also require being on the Barcelona padrón.

Does a foreign resident qualify?

Nationality is not a condition. What is required is registration on the Barcelona padrón, which itself needs no lease and no residence permit, plus meeting the income threshold. Anyone living in another metropolitan town applies through their own town hall.

What does the free tier actually cost?

Travel is unlimited and the annual fee is 6,20 euros. The word free refers to the journeys, not the paperwork: the fee receipt arrives with the card itself rather than later, and can be set up as a standing bank order.

Does it work to the airport?

The metro does, including the Aeroport T1 and T2 stations on line L9 Sud, which an ordinary T-casual does not cover. The Aerobús is excluded, and FGC coverage stops at the edge of the metropolitan fare area.

Can I use it on the Aerobús or on a regional train?

Neither. The Aerobús is expressly excluded even though the airport metro is included, and FGC coverage ends at the edge of the metropolitan fare area, so a trip out to Montserrat or the Vallès falls outside it.

How much does the reduced tier save?

The T-4 costs 2,25 euros for 10 journeys, about 0,23 euros a trip, against 1,30 on an ordinary T-casual and 2,90 for a single ticket. The card support is a separate one-off 4,50 euros.
