A bank account, a driving licence exchange and an immigration appointment all ask for proof of address, and in Barcelona that resolves to one of three council documents, not a utility bill. The volante de residència is the usual answer and can be requested from 16 years of age. The volante de convivència, which needs 18 years, is for when the form asks about your household. A third document, a certificate signed by the council secretary, is the version courts and nationality files want, and it is a separate procedure.
Both volantes are free and neither expires. A Punt BCN kiosk prints the residència one on the spot, the 010 line posts either in about 7 working days or emails it within 24 hours, and with an idCAT, FNMT-RCM, Cl@ve PIN or DNIe login the Virtual Office issues both as a PDF in minutes.
Which padrón document is proof of address in Barcelona? The volante de residència, available from age 16, for anything that asks where you live. The volante de convivència, from 18, when the question is who you live with. Both are free, neither expires, and online both are issued on the spot as a PDF.
Four channels, four different waits
| Wait | Channel | Issues |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes, as a PDF | Virtual Office, digital ID | Both |
| On the spot | Punt BCN kiosk | Residència only |
| 24 hours by email | 010 line | Both |
| 7 working days by post | 010 line | Both |
| Day of the slot | Office, by appointment | Both |
Holding a digital certificate is not a marginal advantage here: it is the difference between minutes and a booked appointment. Without one, the realistic routes are the kiosk for the residència volante and a booked slot at a citizen advice office. The scale says which way the city actually goes: the council’s Virtual Office handled 3.049.684 procedures online in 2025 against 106.762 at the kiosks.
What you bring depends on who it is for
| Requesting for | What you bring |
|---|---|
| As legal representative | Court ruling and acceptance of the role |
| Child under 16, not registered with you | Registered parents’ ID and handwritten joint consent |
| Child under 16, registered with you | Yours and the child’s |
| Another adult over 16 years | Yours, their signed authorisation, photocopy of their ID |
| Yourself | Your current ID document |
The council accepts a DNI, passport or driving licence from Spanish nationals; a residence card, passport, national ID or NIE certificate with the passport from EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic and Liechtenstein nationals; a residence card or passport from everywhere else; and the Withdrawal Agreement document from the United Kingdom. The catch that sends people home: the green A4 NIE sheet does not identify you alone.
The kiosk only gives you one of them
| Document | Punt BCN kiosk | Minimum age | What it proves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volante de convivència | No | 18 years | Address plus who lives there |
| Volante de residència | Yes, on the spot | 16 years | Registration and address |
The kiosk row decides your morning: a Punt BCN kiosk issues the residència volante immediately and cannot issue the convivència one. If the form asked about household composition, the kiosk is a wasted trip and you need the Virtual Office, the 010 line or a booked slot at an office.
The two-year gap leaves 16 and 17-year-olds able to prove their address but not their household, exactly the age when a university enrolment or a grant asks for one.
The third document, and when only it will do
The two volantes are informative documents issued by the register. The council runs a separate procedure for a certificate of registration signed by its secretary, which is what a judicial or nationality file wants.
The rule is blunt: if the request comes from a court, a notary or a nationality application, check whether the wording says certificado rather than volante. The counter issues exactly what you ask for, and a volante handed in where a certificate was wanted costs a second appointment.
The authorisation that lasts one month
To request a volante for another adult you need their express signed authorisation, and the council fixes its life at one month from the date on the document: one kept from last time is void. It travels with a photocopy of the signatory’s ID, not just the signature.
Two confidentiality limits are absolute: no volante for a minor who does not live at your address, and never one issued in the name of a non-emancipated minor. It is always issued in the name of whoever applies.
Why not to request one in advance
The council sets no expiry, but the body asking sets the validity, counted from the issue date: banks, universities and immigration offices commonly want one from the last 3 months. Since the online route is instant and free, requesting it early buys nothing.
One rejection has nothing to do with the day’s paperwork: an expired registration produces no volante at all. Non-EU nationals without long-term residence renew every 2 years; EU nationals and permanent residents confirm every 5, or every 2 if they are not in the Central Register of Foreign Nationals. Not registered yet? Registering on the padrón is free and needs no lease. The register also gates resident pricing at the attractions worth the ticket and the free museum days; the rest is in living in Barcelona, best neighbourhoods, Barcelona on a daily budget and, once the bills start arriving, the council tax dates, where direct debit moves every charge 18 to 49 days later.
Check which of the two the form wants before you book anything.
Frequently asked questions about proof of address in Barcelona
Which padrón document counts as proof of address in Barcelona?
The volante de residència for almost everything: it states that you are registered and at which address. The volante de convivència adds who else lives there, and is what a process asking about your household wants.
Can I request a padrón document from abroad?
Only through the Virtual Office, and only with an idCAT, FNMT-RCM, Cl@ve PIN or DNIe: the 010 line posts to your registered Barcelona address and the kiosks are physical. From outside the metropolitan area that line is 931537010, and it can confirm what your case needs.
Can I get it from a self-service machine?
The volante de residència yes, from any Punt BCN kiosk, on the spot. The volante de convivència no: that one needs a booked appointment at an office, the Virtual Office with a digital ID, or the 010 phone line.
How much does it cost and how fast is it?
Free through all four channels. In person and online it is issued on the spot, downloading as a PDF the moment you finish. By phone it arrives by post in about 7 working days, or within 24 hours by email.
Is a utility bill or a rental contract enough as proof of address?
Not for Spanish administrative purposes: what is asked for is a padrón document issued by the council, and a bill in your name does not replace it. The volante carries no expiry, but the body asking usually wants one from the last 3 months.
Do I need a volante or a certificado for a nationality application?
Nationality files and court proceedings ask for the certificate signed by the council secretary, a separate procedure from the two volantes. Read the wording: the counter issues exactly what you ask for.
