Vall de Núria is the easiest place to touch snow on a day out from Barcelona, and it has no road at all. A rack railway climbs from Ribes de Freser in 39 minutes to a valley at 1,964 m, where a snow park lets children from age 3 go sledging and tubing. La Molina, in the Cerdanya, is the other car-free choice, with its own station on the R3 line, sledging and a gondola for non-skiers. Masella and Vallter need a car and are mostly for skiing.
Where can you see snow near Barcelona at Christmas? In Vall de Núria, reached by rack railway from Ribes de Freser for €34 return, with sledging and tubing from age 3, and in La Molina, which has its own R3 train station, a sledging run and a foot-passenger gondola. Both work as a day trip from Barcelona without a car.
Your day in the snow, step by step
Without a car, the timing is tight but simple. These are this autumn’s times; check them before you go, as they can change in December.
- 6 am: direct bus from Barcelona Fabra i Puig, reached on metro line L1, to La Garriga. It arrives at 6:46 am.
- 6:46 am: R3 train from La Garriga towards the Pyrenees.
- 8:28 am: Ribes de Freser, for the rack railway to Núria, 39 minutes up. Or stay on to 8:59 am at La Molina, where an internal bus climbs to the slopes.
- Coming back: trains leave La Molina at 2:45 pm and 5:44 pm, and Ribes at 5:18 pm and 6:19 pm, all to La Garriga, where the direct bus to Fabra i Puig takes about 45 minutes.

Vall de Núria, the best pick with children
There is no road into Núria, so everyone arrives by rack railway, from Ribes de Freser or Queralbs. A return from Ribes costs €34 for adults, €22 for ages 4 to 13 and €29 from 65, and under-4s travel free; from Queralbs it is €31.
At the top, the snow park opens 9 am to 4:30 pm, with a sledging run and giant tubes to slide down, from age 3. It costs €12 for half an hour, €17 for an hour and €28.50 for the whole day. For a family of four, the train up and an hour in the park for each child come to €146. If someone wants to ski, there are 7.6 km of runs and a day pass cost €22.50 last winter. More on the valley in our Vall de Núria guide.
La Molina, if someone in the group skis
La Molina has 71 km of runs and over 600 snow cannons, which helps when natural snow is thin. Non-skiers get a sledging run at Coll Sisé, snowshoe trails and a children’s snow area, plus a foot-passenger gondola: €20 return for adults last winter, €10 for ages 7 to 11 and €6 up to age 6.
A day pass cost €47 for adults, €40 for ages 12 to 24 and €35.50 for ages 7 to 11, and ski rental €24 a day. The joint pass with neighbouring Masella, Alp2500, was €60 at the ticket office.
What to wear if you packed for a city break
Daytime highs in Barcelona hover around 14.3°C in December, while Núria sits at 1,964 m and La Molina’s runs climb to 2,537 m, so most visitors arrive without the right gear. At the very least you need waterproof trousers or leggings under jeans, warm gloves, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream, because the glare off the snow is strong even on cold days. Trainers get wet fast; boots are better. Bring a spare pair of socks for children. For the rest of your trip’s weather, see Barcelona in December.
What you might not like
- The early start: without a car, the 6 am bus is the only way to get a full day.
- Snow is never guaranteed: in a dry winter there can be little of it outside the runs. Check the resort’s snow report before setting off.
- One way down from Núria: the rack railway is the only exit, so check the last departure.
- No car, fewer options: Masella and Vallter cannot be reached by public transport.
Planning more of your holiday? Barcelona at Christmas gathers the city plans, and if you would rather stay longer in the mountains, compare Andorra in winter or the Catalan Pyrenees villages.
