Cakes in the window of a traditional Barcelona pastry shop

Ordering a Birthday Cake in Barcelona and How Long It Takes

There is no supermarket cake aisle here. A cake with a name on it needs three to seven days, a tiered one two to four weeks, and a wedding cake six to twelve months. What you can buy today is whatever is finished in a pastry shop window, and the historic houses keep the best of it.

Somewhere between the second and third day of trying, most people arriving from the UK or the US work out that the thing they are looking for does not exist here. There is no chilled aisle of finished birthday cakes at the supermarket, no counter that will decorate one while you wait. A cake with a name written on it is an order placed days in advance, and the only thing available today is whatever a pastry shop has already finished and put in the window.

Can I buy a birthday cake in Barcelona today? Only what is already made. Pastry shops keep standard cakes in the window and will add a candle and a name in chocolate. Anything chosen takes days.

The four tiers, and which one you are in

Today or tomorrow. Only what already exists. Pastry shops with a workshop and a display case keep a standing repertoire — truffle, Sacher, mousse, millefeuille — and will add a candle and a name in chocolate. You are choosing from what is there, not designing anything.

Three to seven days. Real customisation opens up: chosen flavour, exact serving count, a written name, an edible printed photograph, simple fondant. This is the standard window for a custom birthday cake.

Two to four weeks. Tiered cakes, modelled figures, elaborate children’s themes. It is also the margin that dated occasions demand — anyone ordering late for a communion in May or an Easter mona finds the diaries closed.

Six to twelve months. Weddings, with their own arithmetic in wedding cakes.

What moves the price

Three levers, in order of weight.

The serving count, as a number. Not “enough for a family”. The usual range is 8 to 20 servings and the price is calculated from that figure before the design is discussed: at Pepina Pastel, 8 servings run 29 to 32 euros and 12 to 14 run 31 to 36.

The coating. Cream and buttercream are the economical finishes. Fondant is hours of hand work — smoothing, sealing — and it pushes the price and the lead time together, from 48 hours out to two weeks.

The modelling. A hand-made figure adds more to a quote than going up four servings does. The cheap alternative is an edible printed photograph, which personalises just as visibly without adding workshop hours.

Per serving, a birthday cake lands around 1,48 to 4,00 euros — a different order of magnitude from the 6 to 10 euros a head of a wedding cake, which is paying for tiers and finish rather than more cake.

The window cakes, and where they are

These are the five houses worth walking to when there is no time to order. All keep finished cakes and most are worth the trip anyway.

La Colmena — Plaça de l’Àngel 12, Ciutat Vella, phone 933 15 13 56. The Jaume I metro station (L4) opens onto the same square, which makes it the easiest of the five to reach with a cake box in hand and the obvious one if you are staying anywhere in the old town.

Foix de Sarrià — Major de Sarrià 57 and Plaça de Sarrià 12-13, phone 932 03 07 14.

Pastisseria Brunells — Carrer de la Princesa 22, El Born, phone 936 53 64 68.

Pastisseria Hofmann — Carrer dels Flassaders 44, El Born, phone 932 68 82 21. Its mascarpone croissant at 4,30 euros needs no order at all and is the fallback when even a window cake is too much.

Escribà — Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 546 and La Rambla 83.

Their histories and what each is actually known for are in historic pastry shops, and the city’s cheesecake obsession has its own ranking in best cheesecake.

The collection window, which is narrower than the shop’s hours

A workshop that takes commissions is not a shop, and several only hand cakes over inside a short slot. HelMa Cakes releases orders from 12pm to 5.30pm on weekdays and 12pm to 2pm on Saturdays — a cake finished on Saturday afternoon cannot be collected at all.

By contrast Foix de Sarrià opens seven days a week, 8am to 9pm, because it is a counter rather than a commission workshop. That difference is the whole reason the window cakes exist.

On a short trip, ask for the collection window in the same message as the price. It is the constraint most likely to make an otherwise perfect order useless.

Before you contact anyone, settle four things

  1. The date of the party, not the date you want to collect. Work backwards from it.
  2. The number of servings, as a number. It is the first thing you will be asked and the whole quote hangs on it.
  3. Whether anything has to be free of gluten, dairy or animal product. This chooses the workshop before the design does.
  4. Who collects it, and when. Most workshops have narrow collection windows — HelMa Cakes only 12pm to 5.30pm on weekdays and 12pm to 2pm on Saturdays.

The fourth is the one that goes wrong on a trip. A cake ready on Saturday afternoon is no use if you fly on Saturday morning.

The tasting does not hold the date

Worth spelling out, because it catches couples every year. At Mericakes the tasting costs 70 euros, is deducted from orders above 800 euros and has to be booked three weeks ahead. It also takes a minimum of 60 guests and accepts a limited number of commissions a week.

None of that reserves your date. The date is held when 50 % is paid, and not before.

If there is a dietary condition

It changes the supplier before it changes the design. Coeliac orders go to a dedicated workshop — the seven of them are in gluten-free cakes — and vegan or sugar-free orders to the houses in vegan cakes. For getting any of it to an address, including from outside Spain, see cake delivery. For a buffet of small pieces instead of one cake, dessert tables.

Frequently asked questions about ordering a cake in Barcelona

Can I buy a birthday cake in Barcelona today?

Only what is already finished. Pastry shops with a workshop and a window keep standard cakes ready — truffle, Sacher, mousse, millefeuille — and will add a candle and a name in chocolate. There is no supermarket cake aisle equivalent here.

How far ahead do I need to order a custom cake?

Three to seven days for a chosen flavour, an exact serving count, a written name, an edible photo or simple fondant. Two to four weeks once it has tiers or modelled figures, and six to twelve months for a wedding.

What actually drives the price of a cake here?

The number of servings first, the coating second and the modelling third. Cream and buttercream are the cheap finishes; fondant is hours of hand work that pushes both price and lead time. A modelled figure adds more than going up four servings does.

How much does a birthday cake cost in Barcelona?

Around 27,50 to 36,00 euros for eight to twenty servings at Pepina Pastel, and 32,00 to 77,00 at HelMa Cakes. Per serving that works out at roughly 1,48 to 4,00 euros, well below the 6 to 10 euros a head of a wedding cake.

Which of the window pastry shops is easiest to reach?

La Colmena, because the Jaume I metro station on line 4 opens onto Plaça de l’Àngel where the shop is. Carrying a cake box across the city on foot or by bus is worse than it sounds, so the metro connection matters more here than for an ordinary errand.

Which pastry shops sell cakes without an order?

La Colmena on Plaça de l’Àngel 12, Foix de Sarrià on Major de Sarrià 57, Brunells on Carrer de la Princesa 22, Hofmann on Flassaders 44 and Escribà on Gran Via 546 and La Rambla 83.

Does a tasting reserve the wedding date?

No, and assuming it does is an expensive mistake. At Mericakes the tasting costs 70 euros, is deducted from orders over 800 euros and needs three weeks’ notice, but the date is only held once 50 % is paid.

Prices and lead times taken from each workshop’s own published information, consulted on 1 September 2026. Wedding averages are the provincial figures published by the booking portals the sector uses.
