Barcelona Christmas Shows 2026, Concerts, Ballet and Carols

Want one evening at a Christmas show during your trip? Choose by who you travel with: ballet with a live orchestra for dance lovers, a choral concert in a modernist hall from €25 to €58, a one-hour Catalan play for young children, or a medieval chant at the Christmas Eve service if you are in town on the 24th.

The Nutcracker plays Barcelona for just five nights this Christmas, from 8 to 12 December, so a trip in the week before Christmas misses it. Christmas shows in Barcelona are the concerts, ballet and traditional plays staged between early December and Three Kings’ Day on 6 January. The Gran Teatre del Liceu hosts the Badisches Staatsballett Karlsruhe with a live orchestra, the Palau de la Música Catalana fills its modernist hall with four choirs on 20 December, and on Christmas Eve Barcelona Cathedral keeps a medieval chant alive before Midnight Mass.

What Christmas shows are on in Barcelona? The Nutcracker at the Liceu from 8 to 12 December, with a live orchestra; La Nit de Nadal, a choral concert at the Palau de la Música on 20 December, €25 to €58; Bach at L’Auditori on 18 and 19 December; and the Song of the Sibyl in the Cathedral on 24 December.

Which show fits your travel dates

Most of the season is concentrated in a few dates, so check them against your flights before anything else.

  1. Arriving 8 to 12 December. The Nutcracker at the Liceu, the only ballet of the season.
  2. Arriving 18 to 20 December. Bach at L’Auditori on the 18th or 19th, then La Nit de Nadal at the Palau on Sunday 20th.
  3. Spending Christmas Eve here. The Song of the Sibyl, in the Cathedral or in Santa Maria del Mar.
  4. Between Christmas and 6 January. Els Pastorets in neighbourhood theatres, the Catalan nativity play.

Is The Nutcracker at the Liceu worth booking?

The Liceu’s Nutcracker runs from Tuesday 8 to Saturday 12 December 2026, danced by the Badisches Staatsballett Karlsruhe with the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the pit, conducted by Georg Fritzsch. Performances start at 7:30 pm, except Saturday at 7 pm.

This is not the traditional storybook staging. Bridget Breiner’s version, The Girl and the Nutcracker, follows a family that has lost its fortune and a girl, Clara, who inherits only her godfather’s doll. The opera house sits on La Rambla, 131 m from Liceu metro, and a 10-ride T-casual at €13 covers the trips between venues (which metro ticket to buy); the Barcelona theaters guide covers seating and booking across the city’s stages.

Which Christmas concert to book, the Palau or L’Auditori

La Nit de Nadal is the Palau de la Música’s own Christmas concert this year: Joan Lamote de Grignon’s work for the Orfeó Gracienc, the Coral Cantiga, their children’s choirs and the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès under Noemí Pasquina. It is on Sunday 20 December at 6:30 pm, lasts about 70 minutes without an interval, and tickets run from €25 to €58.

For many visitors the hall is half the reason to go: a concert is the way to see the stained-glass skylight with the lights down and the seats full. If you only want to see the building, the Palau de la Música visit guide covers the daytime tours.

At L’Auditori, Carlos Mena conducts the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC), the Cor Jove de l’Orfeó Català and the Cor de Cambra del Palau in Cantatas I, III and VI of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, on 18 and 19 December at 7 pm. More venues and their seasons are in the guide to Barcelona concert venues.

Where to hear the Song of the Sibyl on Christmas Eve

The Song of the Sibyl is a medieval chant about the Last Judgement, sung just before Midnight Mass. It is an old tradition that Majorca kept and Catalonia revived, and several churches in the centre sing it on the same night.

At Barcelona Cathedral in the last two years it began at 10:30 pm, with doors opening at 10 pm. In 2024 it was also sung at 7:30 pm in Santa Maria del Mar, at 11 pm in the Sagrada Família crypt, with free entry until full, and at 11:30 pm in Santa Maria del Pi. Remember that public transport stops at 11 pm on Christmas Eve, so plan to walk back, and keep your phone zipped away in the crowd; the Barcelona safety guide covers pickpocket hotspots.

Are Els Pastorets worth seeing without Catalan?

Els Pastorets is Catalonia’s Christmas play: shepherds, angels and devils around the birth of Jesus, with a comic thread and plenty of songs. The most performed text is Josep Maria Folch i Torres’s. Neighbourhood groups stage it every year, in Catalan, from late December into January.

Last season the Orfeó Martinenc in El Clot played from 21 December to 1 January, and the Teatre de Sarrià staged L’Estel de Natzaret from 28 December to 11 January; the 2026 dates come out in December. With children, the one-hour version by Jove Calassanç Teatre is the gentlest introduction. The Barcelona with kids guide has other family plans.

What you might not like

  • Liceu and L’Auditori prices are confirmed when you book, and the ballet’s running time is not fixed yet.
  • Els Pastorets are amateur and in Catalan, charming but hard to follow without the language.
  • The Song of the Sibyl is part of a Mass, not a concert, and the Cathedral fills up.
  • Christmas Day and 26 December are public holidays; the Christmas opening hours guide covers what is open.

For the rest of the season, from the Christmas lights to the Christmas markets, see Barcelona at Christmas.

All twelve Pastorets companies, with prices and which suits children, are in Els Pastorets in Barcelona.

Frequently asked questions about Christmas shows in Barcelona

Is The Nutcracker on in Barcelona at Christmas 2026?

Yes, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu from 8 to 12 December 2026, danced by the Badisches Staatsballett Karlsruhe with the Liceu’s own symphony orchestra playing live. Performances are at 7:30 pm from Tuesday to Friday and at 7 pm on Saturday 12 December. Prices are given when you book.

What Christmas concerts are on at the Palau de la Música?

The headline concert is La Nit de Nadal by Joan Lamote de Grignon, on Sunday 20 December 2026 at 6:30 pm, sung by four Catalan choirs with the Simfònica del Vallès. It lasts about 70 minutes with no interval, and tickets cost €25 to €58. It belongs to the Palau’s Nadal al Palau series.

Can tourists attend the Song of the Sibyl in Barcelona?

Yes. It is sung as part of the Christmas Eve service, so you attend the church celebration rather than a ticketed concert. At Barcelona Cathedral it started at 10:30 pm in the last two years, with doors at 10 pm. Santa Maria del Mar sang it at 7:30 pm in 2024.

Are Els Pastorets worth seeing if I don’t speak Catalan?

Only if you enjoy local tradition for its own sake. The plays are in Catalan and staged by amateur neighbourhood groups, with shepherds, angels and devils, songs and slapstick. The one-hour version by Jove Calassanç Teatre is the easiest to follow, and it is aimed at children.

Which Christmas show is best for children in Barcelona?

The Liceu’s Nutcracker on Saturday 12 December at 7 pm, the only weekend performance, or a one-hour Pastorets for younger children. The Palau concert lasts about 70 minutes and suits children who already enjoy choirs.

Pick your show by your dates: ballet before the 12th, choirs on the 20th, the Sibyl on the 24th.
