Somewhere around 9:00 in Barcelona, in bars that look like nothing at all, people sit down to a plate of stewed pig’s head with chickpeas and a glass of wine. This is the esmorzar de forquilla, the fork breakfast, and it is the meal most visitors never see because it happens while they are still at a hotel buffet. It is eaten with cutlery between 9:00 and 11:00, it is entirely savoury, and it exists for a practical reason: manual shifts start before dawn, so by mid-morning a coffee and a pastry are not enough. Gelida opens at 7:00, La Cova Fumada at 9:00, and La Esquina only runs Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 to 12:00.
What is an esmorzar de forquilla? A full cooked meal eaten mid-morning with a knife and fork, usually between 9:00 and 11:00. The reference dish is capipota, stewed pig’s head and trotter, and it is savoury throughout. It is a working meal, not a brunch, and it is finished before noon.
What the dishes actually are
This is the part that decides whether you enjoy it, because the menu is written for people who already know.
| On the board | What arrives |
|---|---|
| Capipota | Pig’s head and trotter, slow-stewed, often with chickpeas |
| Bacallà a la llauna | Salt cod baked in a tin with garlic and paprika |
| Botifarra amb mongetes | Catalan sausage with white beans |
| Fricandó | Beef stew with wild mushrooms |
| Careta de porc | Boned pig’s cheek, usually grilled |
| Ous ferrats | Fried eggs, served with sobrassada, mushrooms or bacon |
| Xuixo | A fried cream-filled pastry, the one sweet thing on the list |
Capipota is the dish to order first. It appears on almost every counter — Gelida, Can Vilaró with chickpeas, Bar Pinotxo, La Pubilla in a little casserole with beans and confit onion, Quim de la Boqueria — and nothing else sums up the tradition as directly.
If offal is a step too far, three alternatives are standard rather than a compromise: bacallà a la llauna at Gelida and Cal Boter, botifarra amb mongetes at Cal Boter and Bodega Massana, and fried eggs with sobrassada at Santa Magdalena or with mushrooms at Quim de la Boqueria.
Where to go, by neighbourhood
| Neighbourhood | Bar | What defines it |
|---|---|---|
| Esquerra de l’Eixample | Gelida | Opens at 7:00; fricandó and salt cod |
| Esquerra de l’Eixample | Can MarLau | Boned pig’s cheek, jowl, black botifarra |
| Sant Antoni | Can Vilaró | Capipota with chickpeas, no ceremony |
| Sant Antoni | Bar Pinotxo | Capipota, xuixos, escalivada with anchovies |
| Gràcia | Cal Boter | Salt cod, grilled sweetbreads, pig’s trotters |
| Gràcia | La Pubilla | Salt cod, casserole of head and trotter |
| Gràcia | Bar Can Ros | Meatball sandwich, artichoke omelette |
| La Barceloneta | La Cova Fumada | Grilled sardines and artichokes, baby octopus stew |
| Horta-Guinardó | Bodega Massana | Wild mushroom sausage with beans, entrecôte |
| El Poblenou | L’Artesana | Braised cheek and roast beef sandwiches, tripe |
| El Raval | Quim de la Boqueria | Eggs with mushrooms, oxtail, fried fish |
Gràcia has three of them within walking distance, which makes it the easiest neighbourhood to improvise in; how the city divides is in Barcelona’s districts, and the neighbourhood is at its best during the Festa Major de Gràcia.
The two inside the market — Pinotxo and Quim — come with a trade-off. The food is excellent and the queue is real, because La Boqueria is already full of visitors by mid-morning. Barcelona’s other markets have similar counters with less traffic.
The timing, which catches people out
| Bar | From |
|---|---|
| Gelida | 7:00 |
| La Pubilla | Around 8:30 |
| La Cova Fumada | 9:00 |
| La Esquina | 9:00 to 12:00, Tuesday to Saturday |
| Bar Pinotxo | Around 9:30 |
| Can Vilaró | Around 9:30 |
| Time Out Market | 10:00 |
La Esquina has the narrowest window of the lot: three hours, four and a half days a week. Turning up on a Monday is a wasted trip. Cal Boter runs Monday to Saturday, and most of the others keep the mid-morning kitchen going on weekdays and close it by lunch.
There is nothing to book at almost any of them. You walk in, and going early beats going late, because the dishes that ran out do not come back.
What it costs, and why that is not on the menu
Almost none of these bars publish a price list online. You ask at the counter, which is how this kind of house works. The scale is set by their lunch menus — 14,50 euros at Cal Boter — and the useful expectation is that this is priced like a meal, not like breakfast. A capipota with bread and a drink lands closer to lunch than to a coffee and a croissant.
That is also the point. Eaten at 10:00, it removes the need for lunch entirely, which for a day of walking is a better deal than it first looks. What the rest of the day costs is in Barcelona on a daily budget.
Fork breakfast is not brunch
| Esmorzar de forquilla | Brunch | |
|---|---|---|
| When | Weekday, 9:00 to 11:00 | Weekend, late morning |
| Eaten with | Knife and fork | Hands, mostly |
| On the plate | Stews, grilled meat, salt cod | Eggs, pastries, avocado |
| Who it is for | People six hours into a shift | People who slept in |
They are different meals with different customers, and ordering one expecting the other is how visitors end up disappointed by a very good bar. If brunch is what you want, the best restaurants and tapas cover the rest of the eating day, and the travel pass that suits is the T-casual at 13,00 euros for 10 journeys, the airport reaches the centre in about 35 minutes, and safety in Barcelona covers the areas and scams worth knowing.

Frequently asked questions about the esmorzar de forquilla
What is an esmorzar de forquilla?
A full cooked meal eaten mid-morning with a knife and fork, typically between 9:00 and 11:00. It is savoury and substantial — stews, grilled meat, salt cod — and it exists because manual shifts start at dawn, so by nine a sandwich is not enough.
Is it the same as brunch?
No. Brunch is a late weekend breakfast built around eggs, pastries and coffee. A fork breakfast is a weekday working meal of stewed and grilled dishes, served earlier, in plain bars, and finished before noon.
What should I order the first time?
Capipota, stewed pig’s head and trotter, which appears on almost every counter and is the dish the whole tradition revolves around. If offal is not for you, salt cod baked in a tin, sausage with white beans or fried eggs are all standard.
Which bar opens earliest?
Gelida in the Esquerra de l’Eixample, from 7:00. La Pubilla in Gràcia starts around 8:30, and Bar Pinotxo, Can Vilaró and La Cova Fumada from around 9:00. Time Out Market does not begin until 10:00.
How much does it cost?
Almost none of these bars publish a price list online, so you ask at the counter. The scale is set by their lunch menus, for instance 14,50 euros at Cal Boter, and it is closer to the cost of a meal than of a coffee and a croissant.
