Cone of plant-based gelato at a Barcelona gelateria

Vegan and Dairy-Free Ice Cream in Barcelona, and What to Ask

Sin lactosa is not the same as vegan, and at a Barcelona counter the two words get used loosely. Eleven gelaterias handle it properly, two are entirely vegan so the question never arises, and one runs its whole production gluten-free including the cones. The scoop is where most chains break.

🇪🇸 Leer en español Llegeix-ho en català

The word on the label is doing less work than you think. Sin lactosa means the lactose has been taken out of dairy — the milk is still there. Vegano is the word that removes the animal product altogether, and at a busy Barcelona counter the two get used loosely enough that pointing at a tub is not an answer. Eleven gelaterias in the city handle the distinction properly, and two of them are vegan from end to end, which is the version that needs no conversation at all.

Where is there genuinely vegan ice cream in Barcelona? AMMA Gelato on plaça de la Virreina 3 is entirely vegan. Gocce di Latte runs a separate all-vegan shop on Espaseria 14 with sixteen rice-milk flavours.

What to say at the counter

Three short phrases cover it, and staff answer them in seconds.

What you want to knowSay this
Is this plant-based?¿Este es de base vegetal?
Is the cone suitable?¿El cucurucho es vegano? / ¿sin gluten?
Is the scoop shared?¿La espátula se comparte con los sabores con leche?

In Catalan the same three run de base vegetal, el cucurucho becomes el barquillo, and espàtula stays close enough to be understood either way.

The third question is the one that decides it for an allergy. In the two fully vegan shops it does not apply. In the other nine it does, and a good counter answers without hesitating.

Sorbet is not the same product

A sorbet is water, fruit and sugar. Almost every artisan gelateria in the city has three or four and they are suitable by default — but they will not give you the texture of dairy. Paral·lelo Gelato’s are 70 % real fruit.

Plant-based gelato is an attempt at creaminess, and each house solves it differently: rice milk is lighter, nuts add fat and body, oats sit in between. AMMA Gelato’s vegan hazelnut gianduja is harder to pull off than the dairy original.

If you ask for “vegan” and get handed a lemon sorbet, the shop is not wrong — but it is not what most people mean.

The two that remove the question

AMMA Gelato — plaça de la Virreina 3, Gràcia. Vegan throughout, with no dairy range running alongside it. Ecuadorian direct-trade cocoa and Sicilian pistachio.

Gocce di Latte vegan shop — carrer de l’Espaseria 14, El Born. A separate premises from the parent shop, entirely vegan and gluten-free, sixteen flavours made with rice milk, open 2pm to 11.30pm. The original store at Pla de Palau 4 runs noon to midnight, and to 12.30am on Saturdays.

Where the cone matters

DelaCrem — Enric Granados 15, Passeig de Sant Joan 59, Muntaner 59. Its sorbets contain no animal derivative and the entire production is gluten-free, cones included. It is not a vegan gelateria, but it is the only address in Barcelona where the wafer never breaks the chain for a coeliac.

The rest, by neighbourhood

Gràcia

Bodevici — Torrijos 21, workshop at Providència 64. Spain’s first certified organic gelateria, open since 21 May 2011. Every flavour is certified gluten-free, there is a vegan range, and the no-added-sugar versions are sweetened with date. Monday to Friday 4pm to 11.45pm, Saturday from 12.30pm.

Ottimo — plaça de la Vila de Gràcia 15. Dairy-free and gluten-free options on the neighbourhood’s main square.

Three of the eleven sit in Gràcia, so it is the one neighbourhood where a second choice is a two-minute walk. What else is worth the trip up there is in Gràcia.

El Born

Shanti Gelato — carrer dels Carders 18. Covers all three restrictions at once: vegan, dairy-free and coeliac-safe, with a plant range built on rice, almond, oat and soy milk. It also does vegan brownies, cakes and muffins, which none of the others do.

Eixample

Sweet N’Ice — Roger de Flor 200. Open since 2019 and up to 83 flavours across gelato and fully vegan sorbets, including Venezuelan cocoa and a Catalan crema catalana. The longest vegan list in the city.

La Carambola — Lepant 269. Daily artisan production with vegan and dairy-free options, compostable packaging.

Paral·lelo Gelato — Sèneca 18, Ausiàs Marc 55 and the Time Out Market. Gets its creaminess from nuts rather than milk, the most expensive route and the best texture.

Gothic Quarter

Gelaaati di Marco — carrer de la Llibreteria 7. Fifteen plant-based flavours plus dairy-free and low-sugar options, open daily 11am to midnight, though the full range is not out until around noon. Handy if you are already walking the Gothic Quarter.

Sarrià-Sant Gervasi

Uaala! Gelateria — carrer de les Alberes 29. Gluten-free and dairy-free with waffles, and the only entry covering the upper city.

How late can you get one

A visitor’s evening runs later than a resident’s errand, and the closing times are not uniform.

GelateriaLatest closing
Gelaaati di MarcoMidnight, daily
Gocce di Latte, original shopMidnight, and 12.30am Saturdays
Bodevici11.45pm, Monday to Saturday
Gocce di Latte, vegan shop11.30pm

Bodevici does not open until 4pm on weekdays, so it is an evening address rather than an afternoon one. Gelaaati di Marco opens at 11am but the full range is not out until around noon, which matters if you are after a specific plant-based flavour rather than a sorbet.

For a diagnosed allergy the shortlist is three: Bodevici, Shanti Gelato and the vegan Gocce di Latte. Everywhere else, the shared-scoop question has to be asked.

If you want it delivered

Paral·lelo Gelato delivers across Barcelona and the surrounding area, with tubs from 9,00 to 24,00 euros depending on size and number of flavours, and free delivery above 80 euros. Orders go by phone or WhatsApp on 645 74 69 03.

For sit-down vegan meals rather than a cone, see vegan restaurants. The general gelato ranking, dairy included, is in best gelato, and the older sweet institutions of the city in historic pastry shops. On a wet afternoon, the indoor alternatives are in rainy day guide.

Frequently asked questions about vegan ice cream in Barcelona

Does sin lactosa mean vegan in Spain?

No, and conflating the two is the most common mistake visitors make. Sin lactosa means lactose has been removed from dairy, so the product still contains milk. The word you need is vegano, or de base vegetal for the plant-based version.

Which Barcelona gelaterias are entirely vegan?

AMMA Gelato on plaça de la Virreina 3 in Gràcia, which has no dairy counterpart at all, and the separate vegan shop Gocce di Latte runs at carrer de l’Espaseria 14 in El Born, with sixteen rice-milk flavours, open 2pm to 11.30pm.

Can the cone make a vegan gelato not vegan?

Yes, and it is the step people forget. A standard wafer cone can contain egg or wheat. DelaCrem runs its entire production gluten-free, cones included, which makes it the one address in the city where the cone never breaks the chain for a coeliac.

Where can I get vegan and gluten-free ice cream at the same time?

Three places handle both without caveats: Bodevici, whose flavours are all certified gluten-free, Shanti Gelato on Carders 18, and the vegan Gocce di Latte shop. For a diagnosed allergy those are the three addresses.

Is there vegan ice cream with no added sugar?

Bodevici makes versions sweetened with date instead of sugar, including a baked apple and cinnamon that contains only apple. It opened on 21 May 2011 and was Spain’s first certified organic gelateria.

How late do vegan gelaterias stay open?

Gelaaati di Marco and the original Gocce di Latte run to midnight, and to 12.30am on Saturdays at Gocce di Latte. Bodevici closes at 11.45pm but does not open until 4pm on weekdays, so it is an evening stop rather than an afternoon one.

Which neighbourhood has the most options?

Gràcia, with three of the eleven — AMMA Gelato, Bodevici and Ottimo — all within a few minutes of each other. Nine of the eleven sit in Gràcia, Ciutat Vella or the Eixample, so the upper city is thinly covered.

Addresses, opening hours and product claims taken from each gelateria’s own site and shopfront information, consulted on 1 September 2026. Certification and allergen handling should be confirmed at the counter for a diagnosed allergy.
