Fruit and vegetable stalls in a Barcelona municipal market

Barcelona market hours, which ones shut at midday

La Boqueria running 8.00 to 20.30 is the exception, not the pattern. Most neighbourhood markets close for the afternoon, two run a split shift with a 2-and-a-half-hour gap, and the Galvany does not open a single afternoon all week. Six of the eleven are free climate shelters, no purchase needed.

The market most visitors meet is La Boqueria, open 8.00 to 20.30, and that is exactly why the others catch people out. Across eleven municipal markets there are eleven different timetables, and the common pattern is the opposite of La Boqueria’s: the afternoon closes. Two markets run a split shift, shut for two and a half hours in the middle of the day while still listing 20.30 as closing time. One, the Galvany, does not open a single afternoon all week. And six of the eleven double as climate shelters, so you may walk in to cool down without buying anything. The largest, La Boqueria, carries 249 of the network’s 2.159 stalls, and 5 markets rewrite their hours in August.

Which Barcelona markets open in the afternoon? La Boqueria and Sant Antoni, from 8.00 to 20.30 with no midday break. The Galvany opens no afternoons at all, and the Abaceria Central and El Clot run split shifts with a two-and-a-half-hour gap.

Read across the chart and the pattern is clear: the day of the week changes the hours as much as the market does. Santa Caterina runs to 20.30 on a Tuesday and shuts at 14.30 on a Wednesday, same door, same week.

Six are free shelters from the heat

A climate shelter is a space you can enter to get out of heat or cold without buying anything. Six of the eleven are registered as such, and three of those are in the Eixample, the district with no open-air pool at all despite its 277.353 residents.

For an August afternoon this matters more than the shopping: a market hall is cool, covered, free and open, which is a rare combination in the centre. What else works on a hot day is in surviving the heat, and tap water is safe so you need not buy a bottle either.

The two that close in the middle

Abaceria Central, Mon to Thu8.00 to 14.3017.00 to 20.30
Clot, Tue to Thu8.00 to 14.0017.00 to 20.30

This is the classic Spanish split shift, and it produces the most wasted trips because the market is listed as open until 20.30 and someone arriving at four finds the shutters down.

The Galvany opens earliest and closes earliest: 7.30 to 14.30, Monday to Saturday, no afternoons at all. Santa Caterina and Horta also open at 7.30.

At the other end, La Boqueria and Sant Antoni run 12 and a half hours straight, six days a week. La Boqueria is also the largest, with 249 stalls, 11,5 % of all the stalls on the municipal census. The full network is 43 markets and 2.159 stalls, with only eight inactive — where each one is, in Barcelona’s markets and La Boqueria in detail.

August rewrites five of them

MarketSummer period
Santa Caterina1 July to 31 August
Horta15 July to 31 August
Sants1 to 31 August
Abaceria Central3 to 27 August
Llibertat3 to 23 August

No two of the five match, on dates or on duration. At Sants the whole of August runs Monday to Saturday 8.30 to 15.00; at Santa Caterina, Monday to Saturday 7.30 to 14.30. The rule of thumb is that afternoons disappear.

The exception to the exception: at the Llibertat, from 3 to 23 August, Friday is the only day that keeps its afternoon, until 20.30.

What is inside besides the stalls

Each market publishes its own services. The Concepció has wifi, home delivery and fifteen minutes of parking with purchase vouchers, on top of being a climate shelter, and lists two phone numbers: 934 132 314 and 934 764 870.

Many sell online through Mercats a un clic, the municipal platform, and some house shops that are not stalls at all — the Concepció has two florists and an electrical goods shop.

Mid-morning, several have counters serving the fork breakfast, which is a better reason to visit than the shopping, and tapas covers the evening, when Spanish dinner starts closer to 21.00 than to 19.00. On a wet day the markets are the best-distributed covered network in the city, alongside what rainy days with kids lists, and how the city divides is in Barcelona’s districts, reached on the travel pass that suits at 13 euros for 10 journeys.

Check the day before you check the market.

Frequently asked questions about Barcelona market hours

Which Barcelona market is open latest?

La Boqueria and Sant Antoni, Monday to Saturday from 8.00 to 20.30 with no midday break. They are the only two of the eleven that run twelve and a half hours straight all week.

Which one closes earliest?

The Galvany, at 14.30, and it also opens earliest at 7.30. It does not open a single afternoon all week, which makes it the most common wasted trip for anyone assuming markets work like La Boqueria.

Do any close in the middle of the day?

Two run a split shift: the Abaceria Central Monday to Thursday, 8.00 to 14.30 and 17.00 to 20.30, and El Clot Tuesday to Thursday, 8.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 20.30. Both are shut for two and a half hours in between.

Do the hours change in August?

Five of the eleven change, and no two match on dates or duration. The general summer rule is that afternoons disappear, with one exception: at the Llibertat, from 3 to 23 August, Friday keeps its afternoon until 20.30.

Can I go in just to cool down?

At six of the eleven, which are registered climate shelters, meaning you can go in to shelter from heat or cold without buying anything. Three of those six are in the Eixample, the district with no open-air swimming pool at all.
