A calcotada is not a dish you order but an afternoon you commit to: a bib, 20 charred spring onions per person, a bowl of romesco sauce and no cutlery for the first course. In the 2026 season it cost between 36.50 and 59.00 euros a head.

The season runs from November to April under the IGP Calcot de Valls, and the festival that opens it is held in Valls on the last Sunday of January. Where this fits among winter plans is in the best time to visit Barcelona.

What is a calcotada and where do you eat one? A winter meal of grilled calcots with romesco, eaten by hand and followed by grilled meat. The Collserola farmhouses outside Barcelona are the classic setting, Can Cortada serves one inside the city, and menus ran from 36.50 to 59.00 euros in the 2026 season.

How the meal actually works

The calcots arrive on a roof tile, blackened on the outside. You pull the charred layer off with your hands, dip the pale inner stalk in romesco and lower it into your mouth from above. The bib is not decorative.

A typical 2026 menu ran to 20 calcots per person, followed by coca del Maresme and a grilled meat course. That second act is why a calcotada takes about three hours and why it is priced as a full meal rather than a starter.

Romesco is what separates one house from another more than the onion does, because the IGP Calcot de Valls sets a size standard for the calcot itself while the sauce belongs to each kitchen. The same logic runs through the Catalonia wine route, where the grape is fixed and the cellar is not.

Where to go, and what it cost last season

The 2027 menus are not published yet, so the figures below come from the 2026 season and work as an order of magnitude rather than a quote.

RestaurantWhereMenu per person in 2026
El MussolBarcelona city36.50 euros
Can CasesParc de Collserola37.90 euros Tuesday to Friday
Can CasesParc de Collserola44.90 euros other days
Masia Can JanéSant Cugat del Vallès41.90 euros
Can Borrell15 minutes on foot from Sant Cugat44.00 euros
Can Borrell with cava15 minutes on foot from Sant Cugat47.50 euros

The real range was 36.50 to 59.00 euros, a spread of 22.50 euros, with most houses between 37.90 and 44.90. The difference sits in the meat course and the starters, not in the calcot.

Can Cases takes bookings on 93 589 18 68 or info@cancases.com, and Masia Can Jané is at Camí Can Jané in Sant Cugat del Vallès on 665 698 282.

Inside the city or out in the hills

Can Cortada occupies an 11th-century farmhouse in Horta, listed as municipal heritage, and its 2027 calcotada menu opens on 2 January 2027. It solves the meal without leaving Barcelona.

What a city farmhouse cannot give you is the open grill and the long table outdoors, which is the reason most people head up to Collserola instead. Reaching Sant Cugat and the Collserola houses without a car is covered in Catalonia without a car.

Between travel and three hours at the table, a Collserola calcotada occupies roughly 11:00 to 17:00. It is a half-day plan, which is worth knowing before booking anything else that afternoon.

When to book

Weekends in February are the peak, and those need booking weeks ahead. Midweek has far more availability and costs less: Can Cases charged 7.00 euros less per person from Tuesday to Friday.

March and the first half of April are the underrated window. The IGP season does not close until April, the farmhouses are emptier and the weather suits eating outdoors better than February does.

November and December are the trap. The official season opens in November but most farmhouses do not start until January, so the calendar promises more than the restaurants deliver.

Going to the source in Valls

The calcot with a protected designation comes from the Camp de Tarragona, and its capital is Valls, in the Alt Camp county. The Gran Festa de la Calcotada falls on the last Sunday of January and marks the official opening of the season.

That is a different trip from lunch in Collserola. It pairs with Roman Tarragona on the same journey, and rail times are in the train day trips guide.

Frequently asked questions about calcotadas near Barcelona

What exactly is a calcotada?

A winter meal built around calcots, a sweet spring onion grilled over vine wood and eaten with romesco sauce. You wear a bib, peel each one with your hands and eat it standing over the plate. A grilled meat course follows, so it runs about three hours.

When is calcot season?

November to April under the IGP Calcot de Valls. In practice most farmhouses start in January: Can Cortada has its 2027 calcotada menu published from 2 January 2027. Going in November means a much shorter list of places actually serving it.

What did a calcotada menu cost?

In the 2026 season, between 36.50 and 59.00 euros a head. El Mussol charged 36.50, Masia Can Jane 41.90, Can Borrell 44.00 or 47.50 with cava, and Can Cases 37.90 Tuesday to Friday against 44.90 on other days. The 2027 menus are not out yet.

Do you need to leave Barcelona?

No. Can Cortada serves one inside the city, in an 11th-century farmhouse in Horta listed as municipal heritage. What the city cannot give you is the open grill and the long table under the trees, which is what the Collserola farmhouses are for.

Where is the big calcot festival?

In Valls, in the Alt Camp county south of Barcelona, on the last Sunday of January. The Gran Festa de la Calcotada marks the official opening of the season, though calcots are already being eaten from November onwards.

The mistake that costs money

Treating last season’s menu as this season’s price. Houses publish theirs between December and January, so the 36.50 and 44.90 euros of 2026 are a reference and not a fare.

The second is booking late for a Saturday in February, the peak, when you also pay the higher rate: 44.90 euros at Can Cases against 37.90 from Tuesday to Friday.

The third is arriving in November expecting everything open, when Can Cortada does not start until 2 January 2027.

Prices here are from the 2026 season and were checked on 21 August 2026 against published menus; the 2027 opening date comes from Can Cortada. What a meal like this does to a day’s spending is set out in the daily travel budget.

The 2027 menus appear between December and January.
